Today’s Watch
The 10th anniversary of the attempted coup against Erdogan was yesterday. Since then, Erdogan has purged his rivals, detaining or arresting over 3900,000 people and having 4,130 sentenced to LIFE in prison. Political scientist Ersin Kalaycioglu describes the constitutional amendment as a fundamental regime change. He argues that the political system has evolved into a "neopatrimonial sultanism" a term referring to a form of government in which political power is heavily concentrated in the hands of a single individual and key decisions depend largely on the president.
